The TidalStream project was originally funded by the Department of Trade & Industry along with private enterprise to investigate second generation tidal power generators. Existing generators, which operate in maximum depths of 35m, are difficult and costly to install and maintain.The aim of the project was to reduce risks and expense, allowing efficient energy harvesting at 60m depths. Ramboll acquired the advanced engineering department appointed to develop the preliminary platform design and became a partner in TidalStream Limited.Initially, a feasibility study was conducted into the costs and risks of prototype development, and potential harvesting sites identified in the Pentland Firth, between Scotland and the Orkneys. Foundation designs were produced and scale models tested before commencement in preparation for the design of of a full-size prototype for the new Semi-Submersible Turbine (SST).The twin-turbine SST can generate up to 2MW. It consists of a steel monocoque with two 20m rotors and two ballast 'legs'. The structure is semi-submersible, showing 10-15m above water when the ballast tanks are filled. It operates in depths up to 50m. When water is pumped out of the tanks the structure swings up horizontally, providing a stable platform for maintenance. The SST has to withstand high hydrostatic pressures in an upright position and has lifting surfaces that must resist hydrodynamic loads. It also has to deal with wave impacts, sagging and hogging. Under water, the tether arm of the SST has a pivot that connects to a piled or gravity base foundation, allowing the rotors to change direction with the tide. Foundations are pre-installed with electrical cables and guide wires so installation and maintenance can be conducted from the surface. Three and six rotor versions are under development — the latter will provide 10MW output from a single installation at a depth of 60m.

Brighton Pier is a Grade II* listed building which opened in 1899. The pier head comprises structure from three distinct periods. The central core is constructed of Victorian cast iron screw piles while to the northeast corner is an area approximately 35m x 15m known as the boat deck and built in the 1930s. In the mid-1990s, the pier head was then extended, with a new structure surrounding the original construction.

RAF Akrotiri is a busy British military airfield situated on the Akrotiri Peninsular on the South coast of Cyprus. The Base provides joint support to British Forces Cyprus and Operations in the region in order to protect the UK's strategic interests.
On an island site next to London's Tate Modern, two 1960s office blocks were demolished to make way for a landmark development. The three buildings of Bankside 123 provide 70,000 sq m of high specification office space, with retail and leisure facilities at ground floor level. Bankside 1, the first to be completed, is the largest, providing approximately half the development's total indoor area.Our involvement from the earliest stages of feasibility planning helped de-risk the project and maximize commercial viability. We used 3D modelling to map out a forest of existing mini-piles that congest the site. This informed a successful foundation design which incorporates 52m deep piles and a waterproof basement wall that doubles as support for the superstructure. Plunge columns were sunk directly into the piles to facilitate top-down construction. This shaved two months off the construction programme, delivering potential extra rental income of £2 million.We ensured that the scheme design could accommodate a steel frame or flat slab construction, increasing the scope of competition at tender stage. The concrete frame chosen was the best value solution.

Glandyfi Junction on the A487 coastal trunk road runs through one of Wales’ most scenic areas, but its narrow bends made it a notorious bottleneck and accident blackspot. This improvement scheme involved widening and straightening a 1.3km stretch of the road beside the Afon Dyfi estuary, close to the Snowdonia National Park.
Involving the upgrade of the motorway network through widening of existing three lane carriageway to four lanes over a length of 25km, this Highways Agency Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) contract was the first where the target cost came in below scheme budget. It is also notable for being the first UK motorway widening scheme to be constructed using a moveable steel barrier traffic management system instead of a contra flow.

The project for “Nordhavnsvej” is the first stage of a new road to Copenhagen’s Nordhavn (North Harbour). Nordhavn is an old industrial and port area, planned to be developed into a new urban area in the north-eastern part of Copenhagen. When fully developed, the urban area is planned for 40,000 residents and 40,000 workplaces.
