In 2010, US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) found that chloroprene, which is used in the manufacturing process to make neoprene, a synthetic rubber often used in outerwear, wetsuits, laptop sleeves and weather stripping, is a “likely human carcinogen”.
The agency established a highly conservative inhalation unit risk (IUR) based on default assumptions, although there were clear specific differences in response and a physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model was available.
Ramboll provided an independent critical review and integration of the epidemiological, toxicological and mechanistic data on chloroprene as a human carcinogen to support revision of the IUR. We also updated the prior PBPK model and worked with the US EPA to improve the model.
The US EPA has concluded a peer review of the PBPK model for potential use to update the IUR.
