The heat demands of the Glenmorangie Company’s Tain Distillery are currently served by a single heavy fuel oil (HFO)-fired steam boiler.
HFO has a high fuel and carbon cost, which means that the distillery’s operations were producing significant CO2 emissions.
The Glenmorangie Company commissioned Ramboll to undertake a detailed feasibility study for the replacement of the existing boiler plant, with a view to adopting a more efficient, less carbon intensive solution.
During the initial phase of this project, we undertook a high-level review of all options available for the replacement of the existing boiler plant, based primarily on practicability and cost-benefit, and including biomass and compressed gas options.
Recommendations were given to Glenmorangie to proceed to detailed feasibility stage with biomass or compressed natural gas (CNG) as a suitable fuel for the replacement steam raising plant.
A proposed key innovation was converting natural gas to hydrogen in the future to reach results close to zero carbon.
The final solution
Following Ramboll’s recommendations, Glenmorangie chose to invest in a compressed gas facility and purchase natural gas as its primary heating fuel and existing boilers will all be fitted with converted burners. They sought proposals from the market and are currently installing and commissioning the system. The solution proposed was selected due to providing the most cost-effective option whilst still delivering substantial carbon savings and flexibility for the future (eg a shift to compressed bio-methane).
Ramboll’s engineering work was critical to identifying the most commercially and environmentally advantageous technical solution, providing Glenmorangie with confidence in their investment. The project is predicted to save 30% of their current CO2 emissions as well as improving air quality.
