The aim of the project was to design a road traffic tunnel system at Stockholm’s southern suburbs in order to reduce traffic congestion, direct traffic around Stockholm and enhance environmental condition.
Södra Länken was constructed to reduce traffic congestion, direct traffic around Stockholm and enhance the environmental condition in the area. Södra Länken will be a part in a future ring road around Stockholm. It is some 6 kilometers long, of which 4.5 kilometers run through tunnels under the suburbs immediately south of Stockholm’s inner city. It is the longest road traffic tunnel in Sweden, and the second longest urban motorway tunnel in Europe. Södra Länken is Sweden’s largest road tunnel construction ever and the most extensive road project undertaken in the Stockholm region since Essingeleden was built in the 1960’s.
