Al Reem Island development regional infrastructure

The Ramboll Abu Dhabi office has provided the conceptual design for the utilities (package 1) along the 9km of new regional roads that will serve the new mixed use developments on Al Reem — a natural island situated several hundred metres off Abu Dhabi Island. Al Reem is approximately 8.5 sq km in area.

Our work included the design of a 6km sewerage network, 29km of stormwater drainage, a 6km potable water and fire fighting network, a 15km irrigation system and make-up water for district cooling.

The sewerage network includes the collection of sewage, its delivery to the island's treatment plant and its reuse after treatment. The Treated Sewage Effluent (TSE) is delivered to tie-in points or reservoirs for the district cooling systems for each of the four planned developments. TSE is also delivered to irrigation tie-in points or reservoirs. The proposed potable water network will connect the 1200mm diameter main from Abu Dhabi Island to the developments.

Stormwater is collected and delivered to the sea or the nearest of the projected scenic canals that will be created on Al Reem as part of the overall masterplan. Although the island is to be somewhat re-shaped, the areas of shoreline where mangroves grow will be protected.
