Helsinki to Stockholm by train in only 30 minutes? This may sound like the stuff of science fiction but initial studies in Finland suggest that it may be feasible.

Known as the Hyperloop, it is near-vacuum tube that allows for travel at speeds of over 1,000 km per hour. This would revolutionise travel, not only significantly shortening travel times, with passengers travelling faster than by plane, but also considerably reducing the impact on the environment. The Hyperloop also has the potential to affect how we live, travel and transport goods, with significant effects on urban development.

The Hyperloop uses magnetic energy to propel pods at high speed through low-pressure chambers that are free of air resistance and friction. The concept was developed by Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceZ and has been ‘open sourced’ to enable other to take up the concept.

Ramboll is currently performing feasibility studies, focusing on land use and environmental impacts, and detailed technical study will be carried out on the proposed test route.

Last year Ramboll also examined the feasibility of a fixed connection between Sweden and Finland using the Hyperloop.
