The Wettendorf-Bottendorf onshore wind farm covers the energy demand of approximately 8,500 households, and its contribution to climate protection amounts to savings of more than 20,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions annually.

Acting as the Owner’s Engineer, BBB (now Part of Ramboll) provided designs and expert reports, managed the permitting and procurement procedure and supervised the implementation process.

Phase 1

The wind farm was developed in two steps: In 2004 BBB was assigned by a group of land owners to develop a wind energy project near the village of Wettendorf in Lower Saxony, Germany, on their land. BBB took over the whole planning scope and managed the permitting process. Once permitted, the project was acquired and finalised by Danish K/S Hydrovind in 2006.

Phase 2

In 2012, K/S Hydrovind assigned BBB with the development of the extension of the wind farm. Starting with the acquisition of land use rights, BBB was commissioned to manage the entire development process as the Owner’s Engineer. Again, BBB prepared the technical designs including infrastructure and electrical installations. To enable grid integration, the capacity of the existing transformer station was expanded. BBB provided the public communication concept, managed the permitting and the procurement process including contract negotiations with the turbine manufacturer. In the final stage, BBB supervised the construction works to ensure an appropriate execution quality and monitored the commissioning procedure. The process was finalised with the project take-over by Hydrovind in 2014.

Best practice rather than lowest cost

The planning and implementation of phase 2 was based on a best practice approach instead of the lowest cost approach which is usually applied by project developers, in order to optimize the project development margin. As an engineering consultant, BBB therefore focused on the technical and economical sustainability of the project and carefully considered energy yield calculations, choice of turbine technology, Balance of Plant and quality assurance in the implementation phase.

For the client, public acceptance and appropriate project-related communication played an important role. Accordingly, these aspects were given special attention in the planning process.
