The Lynn and Inner Dowsing offshore wind farms are part of the UKCS Round 1 developments to encourage wind power in the UK.
Due to Ramboll's large experience with offshore works from anchoring oil and gas rigs at sea, Ramboll has designed more wind turbine foundations than any other company in the world. The cooperation with MTH has extended to the design of turbine foundations at several offshore wind farms in the UK.
Individual foundation design
The main role of Ramboll has been to make an individual design of the foundation structure for each of the turbine positions. This was done by performing an individual interpretation of the soil conditions at each turbine position taking the overall geotechnical and geological conditions into consideration. In order to do this, supplementary soil investigations were needed and Ramboll assisted as the client supervisor on board the investigation vessel.
As the foundation structure on these sites are monopiles Ramboll is also responsible of the driveability analysis which are performed to determine the minimum size of the hammer needed to install the piles and the fatigue damage resulting from the installation.
The installed capacity of the two wind farms is 194 MW and is expected to provide enough power to more than 130,000 homes.
