The rehabilitated water course will benefit from a self-reproducing trout and salmon population, without the need for a regular release of artificial fry. In addition it is part of Denmark’s fulfilment of the EU Water Framework Directive.
For the Danish Anglers’ Association Ramboll has developed a preliminary proposal for the rehabilitation of Storåen’s original course through the existing hydropower lake at Holstebro. The project entails a baseline description of the existing technical and biological conditions, suggestions for rehabilitation measures, preliminary impact assessment, and cost estimates. In connection with the project Ramboll has prepared visualisations of the future valley landscape, with focus on its recreational possibilities.
The hydropower station and lake were established in 1941, and since this time two thirds of the water course system has been cut off, thereby preventing e.g. the salmon from going through its life cycle. The primary focus of the project has been to establish an authentic rehabilitation of the former valley, with the aim of providing the salmon with full access to the water system so that it may once again reproduce naturally.
