As the use of autonomous vehicles becomes more widespread, it is becoming increasingly important to accurately assess the risks involved.

In Aalborg in Denmark, Ramboll is helping the council determine the viability of electric, self-driving busses to travel on public paths with cyclists. The buses are equipped with a raft of features to help them on their way, including GPS, lasers, radar and cameras. They have a maximum speed of 45 kilometres per hour and will carry up to 15 people along a 2.1-kilometre route.

One of the main objectives of the project is to provide more access to the less mobile segment of the city and allow them to easily get from residential areas public transport and other facilities. If approved, the project will also provide public transport that uses less energy and creates less noise.

Ramboll is not only engaged in risk assessment but is also examining the consequences of the project for traffic safety.
