Ramboll was engaged by a confidential aerospace and defense systems manufacturer who makes braking systems for the aerospace industry. Our client tracks and reports its greenhouse gas emissions to their corporate office as part of their corporate responsibility program, and subsequently reports its greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) as part of their Annual Global Report. In previous engagements Ramboll assisted this client in creating a greenhouse gas reduction strategy. Our client then reached out for us to take an in depth look at the GHG emissions of a manufacturing facility in the midwestern United States. The goal was to evaluate the process and utility systems and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. Much of the utility supplied electrical power is produced from coal fired power plants in addition to a manufacturing process that heavily leverages natural gas, both large GHG contributors.
Project description
Ramboll began with a complete analysis of the facility’s energy use in its various forms throughout the manufacturing process as well as their pollution control systems. GHG equivalency calculations were performed to identify the energy systems with the highest carbon footprint.
With the GHG targets clearly identified, 19 different GHG reduction strategies were developed based on GHG reduction impact, cost and level of complexity. Viable projects were sorted into three tiers, with 11 projects being deemed viable.
The final solution
A report was generated explaining the complexity, cost estimate and GHG impact of the 11 viable projects. These initiatives will require further engineering and cost estimating as we move towards a turnkey solution. These projects are currently being considered as part of the capital budgeting process for next year.
