Ramboll has been appointed by RB Rail AB to conduct a feasibility study of the control-command and signalling subsystems procurement and deployment strategy as a preparation for implementing ERTMS on the double track railway line on the route from Tallinn, Riga (LV), and Kaunas (LT) to the Poland border.

Rail Baltica is a joint project of three EU member states Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, and concerns the building of 870 km cross border railway. In the longer term, the railway line could potentially be extended to include a fixed link between Helsinki and Tallinn as well as integrate the railway link to Warsaw and beyond.

Rail Baltica is an ongoing greenfield railway infrastructure project to link Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland with a European standard gauge rail line. Its purpose is to provide passenger and freight services and improve rail connections between Central and Northern Europe. Furthermore, it is intended to be a catalyst for building the economic corridor in Northeastern Europe. The project envisages a continuous rail link from Tallinn (Estonia) to Warsaw (Poland).

The development of a Single European Railway Area with an internal railway market, based on an integrated infrastructure network and interoperable equipment, is a fundamental aim of European rail policy. The vision is to create a seamless cross-border operation of both long-distance freight and commuter passenger trains.

The Beneficiaries of the Rail Baltica project are ministries of the three Baltic States. In 2014 they established a joint venture RB RAIL AS to be the Main Coordinator and project implementer for the purpose of completing the railway and developing the Rail Baltica project.

Rail Baltica will be built as a new, publicly owned, fast conventional double-track (quadruple track if the railway will run freight trains) electrified and ERTMS-equipped railway line with a maximum speed of 249 km/h for passenger trains and 120 km/h for freight trains.

As part of construction a new railway line the signalling and interlocking system are a vital part of the infrastructure. Ramboll will conduct a feasibility study for the Control-Command and Signalling (CCS)  Subsystems Procurement and Deployment  Strategy. Drawing on proven deployment strategies and future technological-oriented development. We will visualise ideas, scenarios and decisions provide decision-making support and knowledge transfer to the client. Our approach will provide RB Rail AB with a CCS procurement and Deployment Strategy that paves the way for Rail Baltica implementation as a modern intermodal railway corridor.
