Bringing together the expertise of two global engineering firms, the partnership will advise Highways England and protect their technical interests for major road improvement schemes (over £100m) in the East and South East of England over the next five years.

As Technical Advisors, their role is to offer guidance during the scheme development, assess options and identify risks, oversee design and construction and offer assurance on how these schemes are successfully delivered.

Arup and Ramboll’s extensive knowledge of the area and its region-specific challenges, such as the key trade routes and impact from Brexit will help Highways England deliver a resilient road network for the future.

Tony Marshall, Global Highways Leader at Arup, said:
“Our team, supported by Ramboll, will help Highways England to successfully deliver a pipeline of future schemes in the East and South East which will improve safety and support economic growth in the region by enhancing connectivity and improving journey times. We will draw on our previous experience, including leading Highways England’s Technical Assurance team on the A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon upgrade scheme, to help realise efficiencies and deliver value for money.”

Jon Harding, Market Director for Highways at Ramboll adds:
“We’re delighted to be working with Highways England. I’m confident that Ramboll’s tireless pursuit of technical excellence and experience of working collaboratively with contractors through design and build will deliver valuable cost assurance to early stage scheme development. And with sustainability at the forefront of our solutions, we’re committed to ensuring that the next stage of RIS improves the lives of all those who live, work and travel across the East and South East of England.”

Other successful Highways England projects in the region that Arup and Ramboll have delivered or advised on include: Crossrail; Bexhill to Hastings Link Road; the Thames Tideway Tunnel; the Lake Lothing Third Crossing in Lowestoft; and the upgrade of the Hertfordshire section of A120. They are also currently working on the M25 J10-J16 Smart Motorways and Dartford Crossing.
