The re-opening of Hastings Pier commenced with a warm welcome by the Hastings Big Choir, a round of speeches then took place to thank the many thousands of people who were instrumental in the Pier’s restoration. Stuart McLeod from the Heritage Lottery Fund, who gifted Hastings Pier Charity £11.5m, addressed the audience, commenting “we see here what a pier looks like for the 21st century”. In the evening over 2,500 people (and more on the beach!) watched band Madness, led by Hastings born frontman Suggs, play on the pier.
A special dedication was made to the late Jeremy Birch, former leader of Hastings Council who played a significant role in the current restoration of the pier and the recently appointed Mayor of Hastings Councillor Judy Rogers, commented on how the pier was a symbol of the regeneration of Hastings and declared Hastings Pier officially open.
The 272m long pier features its sole remaining building, carefully conserved and adapted into a restaurant plus a new visitor centre called ‘The Deck’. The pier has been designed to be adaptable to host a multitude of events to create memories for all those who visit it. A number events including: gigs, community displays, a circus and more are already planned for the pier, helping to secure its long term financial future. Already an open air cinema has screened Jaws and Star Wars the Force Awakens on the pier ahead of the official opening.
Ramboll’s involvement with the pier dates back to 2006. Offering strategic advice to first Hastings Borough Council and then Hastings Pier Charity, Ramboll played a key role in Hastings Pier restoration, which had seen years of neglect and a devastating fire in 2010. At detailed design and construction phase, services provided on the project included structural design and laser scanning for the repairs to the substructure and design of the buildings. The project also required significant technical input on heritage, conservation engineering, marine engineering, building services, façades, environment and ecology.
Hastings Pier is the latest in our extensive portfolio of restoring and saving approximately one fifth of the UK’s prominent seaside piers.
The much loved Victorian pleasure pier at Hastings has risen like a phoenix following decades of abuse, thanks to a group of local people and funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Ramboll played a key role in the restoration and regeneration of Hastings Pier, offering strategic advice to both the Pier Trust and Hastings Borough Council.
