Abbey Mill House

Abbey Mill House

Sensitivity is required on this project to build an eight storey residential building and a fourteen storey commercial high-rise on an historic site which once housed a mill complex run by Benedictine monks. Care was taken during demolition to preserve a medieval arch, which has been awarded scheduled monument status.

The high-rise element is a steel frame structure clad in glazing and aluminium rainscreen panels. The front elevation is gently curved while the rear and single side elevations are straight planes. At the building's prow, a cantilevered staircase and two glass lifts offer views across the river. Rising from the prow is a ten storey spire: a steel lattice frame clad in rainscreen panels. Plant is hidden behind the spire support.

The residential building is a concrete structure, with blade columns inside the walls for sway stability, and is clad in terracotta panelling. Thirty-two apartments sit above a restaurant situated at ground and basement levels, with footbridge access over an adjacent brook.
