Zhuzhou Urban Watershed Masterplan

Urban Watershed Masterplan

The 856 km long and heavily polluted Xiang River can be seen as the Chinese version of the German River Rhein. The Rhein is a good example of a restored River in an industrial setting, giving a prospect of the future of Xiang River.

In the city of Zhuzhou, the Xiang River is joined by 4 streams with a catchment area of 459 km2. The area suffers from severe environmental problems like water and air pollution. Companies are facing economical stagnation and citizens are starting to emigrate to other cities. Therefore, a strategic masterplan was developed to increase ecological, economical and social sustainability. The focus was to create ecologically healthy infrastructures and to re-establish the industrial competitiveness of the city in order to ensure its long term resilience and to create a liveable city.

Starting from 2011, pilot projects were selected from the masterplan and developed together with the client. An urban masterplan for the Qingshui District is in completion, the Xiawang Gang River is about to be restored, and the Yufeng Lake area - a 848 hectares site, has been developed as a no impact development, where methods like flood control, water quality control and water management were implemented.

The project was carried out by Atelier Dreiseitl, now member of the Ramboll Group.
